Retro-futuristic "Sparking Robot"
Sparking Robot
The amazing Sparking or "Sparkling" Robot has a clear panel on its torso to reveal an electric storm of sparks in its core engine when wound up. It also moves relentlessly forward with a waddling action on concealed wheels.

The clip on its head allows it to be used as a handy memo holder. The retro-futuristic design gives it timeless appeal. [US$ 15]

Poptastic Vinyl Vases (Set of Four)
popup vases
Just add water and a flower to turn these colorful plastic pouches into stable flower vases. Coming in four bright colors (red, yellow, blue and green) with a subtle lattice-work pattern, these vinyl vases bring a vibrant sixties pop sensibility to flower arrangement.

While they look great on a bookshelf, they look even better when backlit with sunlight on a window ledge. When not in use, simply stow flat in a drawer. [US$ 34 (for set of four)]

Bauhaus-style Bamboo-Lattice Bud Vase
Bauhaus bud vase
Bauhaus bud vase
This elegant bud vase combines traditional Japanese bamboo craftsmanship with a Bauhaus sensibility.

An example of Takesensuji bamboo ware from Shizuoka Prefecture, the narrow glass vase is held between two frames of fine bamboo lattice. The lattice frames may be oriented either horizontally or vertically.

Traditional yet modern, it's a work of art even without a flower. [US$ 34]

If you're wondering where Japan's never-ending stream of cute characters and whimsical products comes from, one source seems to be the very popular Design Festa event. Held twice a year in Tokyo's Big Sight convention center, this two-day extravaganza brings together hundreds of illustrators, painters, product designers and craftsmen - both amateur and semi-professional - to show off their work.

The thousands of visitors include many representatives of Tokyo's cosplay community, making the audience here as attention-worthy as the exhibitors. Below are a few creations on the kawaii end of the spectrum that caught our eye. Click on any of the images for a larger view.
