Sixties-style "Mr. Atomic" Wind-up Robot Toy
mister Atomic

This vintage-style robot reflects the Golden Age of the Japanese tin-toy industry. It's a modern replica of the classic early-'60s Cragstan model manufactured by now defunct Japanese brand Yonezawa. The original robots are very scarce and extremely expensive.

The cute boxy design with its chest full of gauges and nuclear fission belt buckle is enough to defuse cold-war Atomic angst, and its "U Turn" action adds further cuddliness as this little critter waddles in circles on its paddle feet.

Standing four inches (10cm) tall, Mr. Atomic is the perfect size to perch on your desktop and inspire you.

A recent trip to our favorite construction workers' clothing store unearthed a few intriguing safety items. The so-called "skeleton" transparent helmets - available in clear, blue, green and orange - allow you to view the hitherto secret inner workings of the hard hat.

The same manufacturer, Meiwa, also offers Kaze - a see-through hard hat with a built-in fan to circulate cool air within the helmet, lowering temperature and reducing humidity.

For the fashion forward, there were even a range of Hello Kitty safety helmets in various shades of pink, obviously responding to construction workers' demands for cuteness as well as protection.
